Understanding Leather Interior: What is it Actually Made From?

What’s funny about leather interior is that usually it's a combination of leather & vinyl. There are some exceptions to this that usually occur in higher-end makes and models where all the leather is real. Most seats only have real leather on the areas we sit and lean our back & head against. The rest, including the sides and back are vinyl. This is an extremely smart business move by car manufacturers that has been happening for decades.

Even some models are entirely vinyl interiors that are marketed as leather interior.

What does this mean for you?

If you’re the type to clean, condition & maintain your own leather interior think about the fact you’re going to use leather conditioner on vinyl..

While there is no reason to say whether this is right or wrong it may make you reconsider the products you buy.

For us it is important to address a few things. Both leather & vinyl may crack or wear down in similar ways. We look for products that offer UV protection and abrasion resistance. For leather its important to keep it hydrated but only years down the road. Factory leather comes with nearly bullet proof hydration for the first few years, depending on case-by-case circumstances. The most important thing is giving that added layer of protection against heat, direct sunlight and friction.
